How to cancel a subscription on iPhone

Short answer

To cancel a subscription you pay for through Apple, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for. If the subscription isn't in that list, you pay the company directly (by card or PayPal), so you have to cancel on its website or app instead.

First, find out who bills you

Every subscription on your iPhone is billed in one of two ways, and that decides where you cancel it:

Deleting an app never cancels its subscription. You keep paying until you cancel.

Cancel an Apple subscription from Settings

This works for every subscription billed by Apple, including Apple services like iCloud+, Apple Music and Apple TV+.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap the subscription you want to stop.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial) and confirm.

You can also get there from the App Store: tap your profile picture, then Subscriptions.

If there's no cancel button, the subscription has already been cancelled; the screen shows the date it ends.

Cancel subscriptions billed outside Apple

For services billed directly, sign in on the company's website and look for Account, Membership, Billing or Plan. Common examples (menu names change from time to time):

ServiceWhere to cancel when billed directly
Netflixnetflix.com › Account › Cancel Membership
Spotifyspotify.com › Account › Manage your plan › Cancel
Amazon Primeamazon.com › Account › Prime membership › Manage › End membership
ChatGPT Pluschatgpt.com › your profile › Settings › Account › Manage › Cancel subscription
YouTube Premiumyoutube.com/paid_memberships › Deactivate
Disney+disneyplus.com › Account › Subscription › Cancel

What happens after you cancel

Keep it from happening again

The subscriptions people forget are the ones they never see. A tracker like Subs lists everything you pay for, including subscriptions billed outside Apple, reminds you before each renewal and shows step-by-step cancel instructions for popular services. It can also find the recurring charges on a screenshot of your card statement, on your iPhone, without connecting to your bank.

Cancel an App Store subscription on iPhone

  4. Choose the subscription. Tap the subscription you want to stop.
  5. Cancel. Tap Cancel Subscription or Cancel Free Trial, then confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting an app cancel the subscription?

No. Deleting an app doesn't stop its subscription. Cancel it in Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions, or on the company's website if you pay them directly.

Why isn't my subscription in the Subscriptions list?

Only subscriptions billed by Apple appear there. If you signed up on the company's website, you pay them directly and need to cancel in your account on their website or app. Also check that you're signed in with the Apple ID you used to subscribe.

Will I get a refund when I cancel?

Cancelling stops future charges but doesn't refund the current period. For App Store charges you can request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

When should I cancel to avoid the next charge?

At least 24 hours before the renewal date. Apple can charge a renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
