How to cancel or pause YouTube TV
Open tv.youtube.com in Safari or on a computer, tap your profile photo, go to Settings, then Membership, tap Manage and choose Cancel membership. You keep access until the end of the payment or free trial period, and recordings in your library expire after 21 days. If you only need a break, the same screen lets you pause for up to six months, which keeps your recordings.
Who bills you for YouTube TV
- Google bills most members directly. You cancel on the YouTube TV website.
- A mobile carrier or internet provider. If you signed up through one, YouTube TV says you're billed by them and the charge appears on that bill. Their policies apply to refunds, and provider-billed members can't pause.
- Apple: YouTube TV no longer accepts payment through Apple's in-app purchase and doesn't support signing up in its iPhone or iPad app, so a membership started recently isn't billed by Apple. If YouTube TV does appear in your iPhone's Subscriptions list, cancel it there.
Cancel YouTube TV from an iPhone
Google's iPhone instructions send you to a computer or your mobile web browser rather than the app.
- Go to YouTube TV in a browser. Open tv.youtube.com in Safari on your iPhone, or on a computer, and sign in.
- Tap your profile photo. Tap your profile photo.
- Open Settings, then Membership. Go to Settings and then Membership.
- Tap Manage. Tap Manage.
- Choose Cancel membership. Tap Cancel membership and confirm with Cancel. To take a break instead, choose Pause membership here.
Want it gone right now rather than at the end of the period? YouTube TV says to contact its support team to cancel and remove access immediately.
Pause instead: usually the better choice
Canceling and pausing live on the same screen, and for a seasonal break (say, between sports seasons) pausing is usually the smarter move.
| Cancel | Pause | |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Until the end of the payment or free trial period | Ends when the current billing cycle ends; none during the pause |
| Recordings | Expire after 21 days | Saved until the pause ends, subject to the standard 9-month expiration |
| Length | Until you sign up again | From 4 weeks up to 6 months |
| What happens next | Nothing is charged; rejoining may not get promotional prices | Charged automatically at your normal monthly price when the pause ends; that date becomes your new billing date |
To pause: Settings › Membership › Manage › Pause membership, choose the length on the slider, then Pause. You can resume any time before the scheduled date. The risk with a pause is forgetting it: it restarts billing on its own.
What happens after you cancel
- You don't lose access immediately, even during a free trial. YouTube TV says canceling does not immediately remove your access; you keep it until the end of the payment or trial period.
- Recorded programs expire after 21 days. YouTube TV saves your library preferences in case you sign up again, but warns you may not have access to previous recordings.
- Add-on networks go too, and you can't add networks without a base membership.
- Canceled by mistake? You can reactivate from the Membership page.
Just want to drop an add-on?
Add-on networks can be removed individually without canceling YouTube TV: on a computer go to Settings › Membership, click Cancel next to the network and confirm with Yes, Cancel. Note that trials for extra networks have their own sign-up and billing, so an add-on trial can convert to a charge even if you're happy with the base plan.
Refunds and free trials
- Refunds: YouTube TV says it does not give refunds or credits for partial billing periods. A refund is possible if features included with the membership are defective or don't perform as stated; if one is granted you lose access immediately. Card refunds typically take 3 to 5 business days.
- Free trial: trial lengths vary by plan and are for people new to YouTube TV. When the trial is over, the account switches to a paid membership automatically. Because canceling doesn't cut off a trial, you can cancel as soon as you've signed up and still watch to the end.
Don't let a pause or trial restart quietly
YouTube TV is one of the larger charges on most people's statements, and both its trial and its pause end with an automatic charge. In Subs, add YouTube TV with the date billing resumes and you get a reminder before it does. YouTube TV isn't in the built-in service list, so type the name in. Later, if the price changes, record the new price and Subs shows what the increase adds up to over a year.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel YouTube TV in the iPhone app?
Google's iPhone instructions say to go to YouTube TV using a computer or your mobile web browser, then Settings, Membership, Manage and Cancel membership.
If I cancel a YouTube TV free trial, do I lose access right away?
No. YouTube TV says canceling does not immediately remove your access, even during the free trial period. You keep it until the trial ends.
How long does YouTube TV keep my recordings after I cancel?
Recorded programs in your library expire after 21 days. If you pause instead of canceling, recordings are saved until the pause ends, subject to the usual 9-month expiration.
How long can I pause YouTube TV?
From 4 weeks up to 6 months. When the pause ends you're charged automatically at your normal monthly price.
Does YouTube TV refund the rest of the month?
No. YouTube TV says it does not give refunds or credits for partial billing periods.
Why isn't YouTube TV in my iPhone's Subscriptions list?
That list only shows what Apple bills. YouTube TV no longer accepts payment through Apple's in-app purchase, so memberships are billed by Google or by a carrier or internet provider.
