How to cancel YouTube Premium
How you cancel depends on who bills you. If you joined in the YouTube app on your iPhone, Apple bills you: in the app go to Settings › Purchases and memberships, tap the membership, then Manage Apple Subscriptions and Cancel. If Google bills you, Google says iPhone users must cancel on a non-iOS device, such as a computer, at youtube.com/paid_memberships. Either way your benefits continue until the end of the billing period.
Check who bills you: Apple or Google
In the YouTube app, go to Settings › Purchases and memberships. A membership bought through the iPhone app is marked Billed by Apple. Otherwise you're most likely billed by Google, because you signed up on the web or on another device.
Two other routes exist. A membership started on Android can be billed through Google Play, and in the US Google lists Google Fi and Verizon as partner providers; for a partner plan, Google says you must contact the partner directly to cancel.
Billed by Apple: cancel in the YouTube app
- In the YouTube app, tap Settings, then Purchases and memberships.
- Tap the membership you want to cancel.
- Tap Manage Apple Subscriptions.
- Tap your membership.
- Tap Cancel.
You end up in the same place as Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions on your iPhone, so you can go there directly if you prefer.
Billed by Google: cancel on a computer
This is the part that trips people up. Google's help page says: “iOS users who are billed through Google must cancel using a non-iOS device (for example, a computer).” The steps there are:
- Open paid memberships on a computer. On a computer, go to youtube.com/paid_memberships and sign in.
- Click Manage membership. Click Manage membership.
- Click Deactivate. Click Deactivate. If you're eligible to pause, the Pause instead option appears here.
- Click Continue to cancel. Click Continue to cancel.
- Choose a reason. Select your reason for canceling, then click Next.
- Click Yes, cancel. Click Yes, cancel. Your benefits continue until the end of the billing period.
What happens after you cancel
- Benefits continue until the end of the billing period, and you aren't charged again unless you re-subscribe.
- On a family plan, if the family manager cancels, all family members lose access to the membership.
- YouTube Music is included with Premium. A standalone YouTube Music Premium membership is separate and has to be canceled on its own.
Pause for 1 to 6 months instead
If Google bills you monthly, you can pause: at youtube.com/paid_memberships choose Manage membership › Deactivate › Pause instead, pick the number of months on the slider and select Pause membership.
- The pause starts after the current billing cycle and can last from 1 to 6 months.
- You (and any family members on the plan) have no Premium access during the pause. Downloads are kept but can't be played until you resume.
- You aren't charged until the membership resumes, and you can resume early.
- Not available if you're billed through Apple or Google Play, or on an annual plan.
Refunds
- Google says you won't be refunded for the period between when you cancel and when your membership ends, and that refunds aren't available for partially used prepaid plans.
- You may be eligible if videos or features related to your purchase don't work. If a refund is granted, Premium access is removed.
- Apple-billed: YouTube says it can't grant refunds for purchases made through Apple billing. Ask Apple instead; see how to request an Apple subscription refund.
Trials, annual plans and double billing
- Trials: if you cancel during a trial, you keep Premium benefits until the end of the trial period. Trials renew automatically using the payment method on file, and only one is allowed per 12-month period.
- Annual plans are prepaid and non-recurring. Google says they aren't refundable and can't be paused, and they can't be bought on Apple devices.
- Student plans need re-verification every year.
- Paying twice: Google warns that standalone subscriptions are not automatically canceled when you join a different plan. If you upgraded from YouTube Music Premium to Premium, or joined a family plan, check that the old membership isn't still billing.
Spot a duplicate YouTube charge
Because YouTube memberships can be billed by Apple, by Google or by a carrier, a duplicate can sit on a different statement line from the one you're watching. In Subs, add YouTube Premium with its price and date for a reminder before each renewal, and import a screenshot of your card statement to see every recurring charge side by side. Subs keeps the link to youtube.com/paid_memberships on the subscription for when you're at a computer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel YouTube Premium in the iPhone app?
