How to cancel your Audible membership
Sign in at audible.com, open Membership details, choose Cancel membership, then Confirm cancellation. It works in Safari on an iPhone. If you joined inside the iOS app, Apple bills you and you cancel in Settings › Subscriptions instead. Spend your credits before you cancel: Audible says unused membership credits are forfeited at the end of your final billing cycle, while audiobooks you've bought are yours to keep.
Who bills you: Audible, or Apple?
Audible documents three ways to be billed: directly by Audible (using the cards on your Amazon account), through the Apple App Store, or through Google Play. It matters because Audible says a membership billed by a store can't be canceled on the Audible site and has to be canceled in that store.
- Check for Apple billing: open Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions on your iPhone. If Audible is listed there, Apple bills you.
- No cancel option on audible.com? Audible says you might have more than one account and suggests signing in with a different email address.
Cancel on audible.com (works in Safari on iPhone)
Audible's cancel article gives steps for the desktop site and the mobile site. It doesn't give steps for the Audible app, so use a browser.
- Sign in at audible.com. Open Safari on your iPhone, go to audible.com and sign in with the account that has the membership.
- Open the main menu and select your name. Select the main menu, then select your name.
- Open Membership details. Select Membership details.
- Select Cancel membership. Select the Cancel membership link. Audible may show offers or a pause option first.
- Confirm cancellation. Select Confirm cancellation. Audible sends an email confirmation.
On a computer the path is the same, except you select your name in the top navigation instead of opening the main menu. Deleting the Audible app does not cancel a membership.
Cancel Audible billed by Apple
- Open Settings on your iPhone (or the App Store) and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Audible.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then Confirm.
If you don't see Cancel Subscription, Audible says the membership is already canceled and won't renew. If you plan to rejoin directly on audible.com, wait until the Apple cancellation is complete before signing up again.
What you keep and what you lose
| After your final billing cycle | |
|---|---|
| Audiobooks you bought with a credit or a card | Yours to keep. You can download them again any time, even after canceling. |
| Unused membership credits | Forfeited. Audible advises using them before your plan ends. |
| Titles included with your plan | Locked until you rejoin. |
| Monthly picks on the Standard plan | Access is lost. |
| Your account | Stays open. You can still buy audiobooks at full price. |
Two details are easy to miss. Credits you received through an App Store or Google Play membership don't expire, according to Audible's cancel article. And returns stop with the membership: only active members can return a title, so do any returns before you cancel.
Closing your Amazon account is a different thing entirely. Audible warns that it deletes all data, including purchased titles.
Pause or switch plans instead
- Pause. Monthly members can pause for 30, 60 or 90 days, up to 90 days in total every 12 months, once they've had 30 days of paid membership. Payments stop and no new credits arrive, but the credits you already have stay usable. Annual memberships can't be paused. On the site it's Membership details › Pause membership; in the app, Profile › Membership › Manage › Pause membership.
- Apple-billed pause. Pauses for App Store subscriptions always last exactly 30 days.
- Switch plans. Membership details › Switch membership lets you move to a different plan. If Apple bills you, use See All Plans under Audible in your iPhone's Subscriptions list.
Refunds and the free trial
Audible's Conditions of Use say that if you cancel, you won't receive a refund of fees already paid. Cancel before the renewal date rather than after it.
The free trial lasts 30 days. Audible says you can cancel any time before the trial ends and you won't be charged; after that it renews automatically as a paid membership.
Don't lose credits to a renewal you forgot
Audible is the classic subscription people keep by accident: credits pile up, the charge is small, and the renewal date drifts out of mind. In Subs, add Audible with its renewal date and you get a reminder a few days before, which is your cue to either spend the credits and cancel or let it ride. Subs also keeps the link to Audible's Membership details page on the subscription, so the cancel steps are one tap away when you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I lose my Audible credits when I cancel?
Yes. Audible says all remaining membership credits are forfeited at the end of your final billing cycle, so use them before then. Credits from an App Store or Google Play membership are the exception and don't expire.
Do I keep my audiobooks after canceling Audible?
Yes. Any audiobook you bought with a credit or a card is yours to keep, and you can download it again after canceling. Titles that were only included with your plan are locked.
Can I cancel Audible in the iPhone app?
Audible's cancel instructions cover the desktop and mobile websites, not the app. Use audible.com in Safari, or iPhone Settings › Subscriptions if Apple bills you.
Why can't I find the cancel option on audible.com?
Either Apple or Google bills you, in which case you cancel in that store, or you're signed in to a different Audible account than the one with the membership.
Can I pause Audible instead of canceling?
Yes, on monthly plans: 30, 60 or 90 days, up to 90 days in total every 12 months, after 30 days of paid membership. Annual plans can't be paused.
Will Audible refund me if I forgot to cancel?
Audible's Conditions of Use say fees already paid aren't refunded when you cancel. If Apple bills you, you can ask Apple for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
