How to cancel Amazon Prime

Short answer

In the Amazon Shopping app, tap the Profile button, select Manage Prime Membership, open the Manage Membership menu and tap End Membership, then follow the screens. On the web it's Accounts & Lists › Prime Membership › Manage Membership › End Membership. Amazon's terms give a full refund if you haven't used any Prime benefits since your latest charge, and you can pause Prime instead of ending it.

Who bills you for Prime

Most members are billed by Amazon and cancel with Amazon. Two exceptions come from Amazon's own help page:

Your iPhone's Subscriptions list only shows what Apple bills, so a Prime membership billed by Amazon won't be in it. If an Amazon or Prime Video item does appear there, such as a Prime Video add-on paid through Apple, that item is canceled in iPhone Settings.

Cancel Prime in the Amazon app on iPhone

  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app. Open the Amazon Shopping app on your iPhone and make sure you're signed in to the account with Prime.
  2. Tap the Profile button. At the bottom of the screen, tap the Profile button, which looks like a silhouette of a person.
  3. Select Manage Prime Membership. Scroll down and select Manage Prime Membership.
  4. Open Manage Membership. Tap the Manage Membership drop-down menu, then tap the Manage Membership button in that menu.
  5. Tap End Membership. Tap End Membership.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. Continue through the screens until Amazon confirms the membership is ending.

The last step is several screens long. Read each one rather than tapping through, and stop only when Amazon confirms that the membership is ending.

Cancel Prime on the web

  1. Go to Amazon.com in a browser and sign in.
  2. Hover over Accounts & Lists at the top right and select Prime Membership.
  3. Hover over Manage Membership at the top right and choose End Membership.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish canceling.

Amazon's help page “How to Cancel Amazon Prime” links straight to the same cancel flow if you can't find the menu.

Will you get a refund?

Amazon's Prime Terms & Conditions set out two cases:

Amazon's help page says the same thing more briefly, that paid members who haven't used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period, and that refunds are processed in three to five business days. Outside those cases the terms call the fee non-refundable.

In practice: if a renewal just went through and you haven't ordered with Prime shipping or streamed anything since, cancel now rather than later.

Prime Video channels and other subscriptions

Amazon's pages don't agree on what happens to add-on subscriptions. Its “How to Cancel Amazon Prime” page says subscriptions on Prime Video, like Paramount+, continue once your Prime membership ends. Its Prime Video help page says additional subscriptions tied to your Prime or Prime Video membership don't renew once the membership ends.

Don't rely on either. After ending Prime, open Your Memberships and Subscriptions in your Amazon account and cancel anything you no longer want. Two related notes:

Pause Prime instead of ending it

From the Membership Management section of Prime Central, eligible members can:

The pause takes effect after your current billing cycle, you have no Prime benefits while paused, and subscriptions tied to your Prime membership end when billing is paused. You can't pause if you joined through a third party, are on a free trial or discounted offer, or have a Prime Video only, Prime Business, Student Prime or Prime Shipping only plan.

Free trial and price changes

Amazon describes the Prime free trial as 30 days for eligible customers, with no charge unless you keep Prime afterwards: cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged. And if the membership fee goes up, Amazon's terms say it will notify you before the renewal and you can cancel before it takes effect.

Get reminded before Prime renews

Because the refund depends on canceling before you use a benefit, timing matters more with Prime than with most subscriptions, and an annual renewal is easy to forget. In Subs, add Amazon Prime with its renewal date and a reminder a few days ahead. When it fires you can decide while the old period is still running, and Subs keeps the link to your Prime membership page on the subscription. If Amazon announces a new price, record it and Subs shows what the increase costs you per year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund if I cancel Amazon Prime?

Yes, in two cases. Within 3 business days of signing up or of a trial converting, Amazon refunds the fee less the value of benefits used. At any other time you get a full refund only if you haven't used any Prime benefits since your latest charge.

How long does an Amazon Prime refund take?

Amazon says it processes the refund in three to five business days.

Can I pause Amazon Prime instead of canceling?

Yes, if you're eligible: for one month on a monthly plan, or for up to a year on a monthly or annual plan. Trial, student, Prime Video only and third-party memberships can't be paused.

Does ending Prime cancel my Prime Video channels?

Amazon's own pages give different answers, so check Your Memberships and Subscriptions after ending Prime and cancel each add-on you don't want.

Why isn't Amazon Prime in my iPhone's Subscriptions list?

That list only shows subscriptions Apple bills. Prime is normally billed by Amazon or a partner, so you cancel it in the Amazon app or on Amazon.com.

I signed up for Prime through another company. How do I cancel?

Contact that company. Amazon says third-party memberships are canceled, and refunded if applicable, under that company's policies.
