How to cancel Netflix

Short answer

Go to netflix.com/cancelplan in a browser, choose Cancel, then Finish Cancellation. You can keep watching until the end of the billing period you've paid for. If there's no cancel option in your account, someone else bills you: an older account billed by Apple is canceled in iPhone Settings, and a Netflix package from a carrier or TV provider is canceled with that company.

First, check who bills you for Netflix

Where you cancel depends on who takes the payment. Netflix says to look at the Membership and Billing section of your Netflix account to see whether Apple bills you.

Netflix puts it simply: if you don't see the cancellation option in your account, you need to cancel with your payment partner.

Cancel Netflix in a browser (iPhone, iPad or computer)

Netflix's cancel instructions use its website; they don't describe canceling inside the iPhone app. Safari on your iPhone works fine.

  1. Open the cancel page. In Safari or any browser, go to netflix.com/cancelplan and sign in. Netflix calls this the Manage your membership page.
  2. Choose Cancel. Tap or click Cancel.
  3. Finish Cancellation. Under Cancel, tap or click Finish Cancellation. If you're offered a one-month pause first, skip it to keep canceling.
  4. Keep the confirmation email. Netflix sends a confirmation to the email address on the account. You can keep watching until the billing period ends.

Signing out or deleting the Netflix app doesn't cancel anything. Netflix says so on its cancel page.

Cancel Netflix billed through Apple

If your account still shows Apple billing, Netflix says you must cancel through Apple:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap Netflix.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find it.

Three things Netflix points out for Apple-billed accounts:

What happens after you cancel

Refunds, pausing and cheaper plans

Know before Netflix renews

The hard part of canceling a streaming service is remembering to decide before the next charge. In Subs, add Netflix with its price and billing date and you get a reminder before each renewal, with a button that opens Netflix's cancel page. If you've stopped watching, the monthly check-in or a quick “what should I cancel?” to Ask Subs shows what dropping it would save you per year.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting the Netflix app cancel my membership?

No. Netflix says signing out of your account or deleting the app doesn't cancel it. Cancel at netflix.com/cancelplan, or through whoever bills you.

Why is there no cancel option in my Netflix account?

Because someone else bills you. Netflix says that if the cancellation option is missing, you need to cancel with your payment partner, such as Apple or a carrier or TV provider package.

Can I pause Netflix instead of canceling?

Often, yes. Netflix offers a one-month pause during the cancel steps, up to three months in total, though not for every payment method.

Will my profiles and watch history be there if I come back?

Yes, if you restart within 24 months. Netflix keeps your viewing activity, recommendations and profiles for that long, then deletes the account.

Can I still sign up for Netflix through Apple?

No. Netflix says Apple billing isn't available to new or rejoining customers. Existing Apple-billed accounts keep working and are canceled in iPhone Settings › Subscriptions.

Does Netflix have a free trial?

No. Netflix doesn't offer free trials.
